Time Will Make People to Forget Everything, 'Cause That's Why They're Human (2021)

A stop-motion animation work depicting zombified people singing "This question has something inconvenient so it cannot be answered; in time, people will soon forget everything" to Erik Satie's *VEXATIONS* (a composition in which the same phrase is repeated 840 times). They simultaneously and endlessly reconstruct a cardboard maze while singing.

The work originates from the observation that the deliberate vagueness and prolixity of statements by politicians and bureaucrats regarding issues such as the Tokyo Olympics, the so-called Mori-Kake scandal, the Cherry Blossom Viewing Party affair, and the state funeral controversy resembled performances of experimental music. We tend to assume that expression — in music, art, and so forth — is something carried out by musicians and artists, yet naturally, a certain aesthetic and ideology is also reflected in the statements and media presentations made by politicians and bureaucrats. That is to say, what they are doing is also a form of representation and expression.

I was struck by the realization that the temporal languor that had been practiced "aesthetically" in experimental music was being actually expressed with politically negative intent. It appeared that, for inconvenient problems, the intention was to respond with deliberate prolixity and tedium in order to promote forgetting and divert attention.

I believe that what is demanded of specialists is to analyze — as music and art — not only what occurs within the formal framing of music and art, but also the spectacles deliberately staged in reality (such as state funerals) and, conversely, the techniques used to divert attention.
