Fastest (2007)

A video installation in which flicker-processed footage is projected onto a reflective screen.

When flicker-processed images of the sea and mountains are projected onto a silver glossy screen, the projected light forms images, while at the same time the projector's light source is reflected, causing that area to appear like a sun — one that is not contained within the footage itself.

For the viewer, it becomes apparent that what they are seeing — images of "the sea" or "mountains," things that exist in the actual world — are simultaneously virtual images and phenomena produced by light.

In other words, the imagery in this work is perceived in a constant oscillation between the domain of the image and the domain of physical phenomena.

The idea that presenting moving images with their technical foundation exposed — rather than immersing the viewer in the image alone — produces a greater intensity in the "image" itself is something I learned from horror films, particularly J-horror.
